Goethe & Ghetto
Goethe och Ghetto
A film about the life and music of Viktor Ullmann, who lived and composed in the Nazi ghetto of Theresienstadt as if human creativity could defy humiliation and death, but who died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz on October 18, 1944. The external frame is the story of Viktor Ullmann’s life and music. The internal narrative, or the undertext, penetrates a number of existential questions still facing us: What is the ultimate source of culture and artistic creativity? Under what external conditions will it materialize?
